Broward County is ranked 2nd with the highest rate of HIV in the State of Florida. The 1st being Miami-Dade.

Florida is rank #1 in the nation with the highest rate of HIV.

In Florida 15% of new infections of HIV are among persons under the age of 25.

For 16 consecutive years, HIV has been the leading cause of death for both black men and women between the ages 25-44 in Florida. Although in 2008, HIV was still the leading cause of death for black women, HIV is now down to the 3rd leading cause of death for black men in this age group.

Of the living HIV/AIDS cases among blacks, 77% were US born, 15% Haitian born, 2% Jamaican born and the remainder were born elsewhere.

In 2009, the HIV case rate among adult black men was 7 times higher than that for white men in Florida and 20 times higher for adult black women than that among white women.

 

HIV/AIDS Among Women

As of the end of 2009 in Florida, women ages 13+ accounted for 11% of reported AIDS cases in 1987. That figure steadily rose to 33% in 2009. Women accounted for 26% of the HIV cases reported in 2009. In 2009, 1,448 AIDS and 1,451 HIV cases were reported among women, with the majority being black.
Of the 2,899 cases above 1,968 were Black; 468 White; 387 Hispanic and 58 other.

 

HIV/AIDS Among Men

In Florida, men ages 13+ accounted for 89% of reported AIDS cases in 1987. That figure steadily declined to 67% in 2009. Men accounted for 74% of the HIV cases reported in 2009.

 

HIV/AIDS Among Female Adolescents, Ages 13-19

According to CDC’s Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS), greater than 40% of female high school students reported ever having had sexual intercourse. This risk was higher among minority females.

Of the female adolescents living with HIV/AIDS in Florida, 27% were from Miami-Dade County, 16% from Broward County and 10% from Palm Beach County. In Florida, 15% of new infections of HIV are among persons under the age of 25. Between the years of 2007‐2009, 736 HIV cases were reported for 13-19, of which 37% were female
